It’s October already! And, the rain gods seem to be having a ball in the northeast region. Anyway, continuing on our @Connect series, we have an exclusive interview with fashion designer, Sekuzo Sovenyi. We finally managed to catch up with Sekuzo and steal him away from his hectic schedule.
Sekuzo Sovenyi, the 22 years old dude, is a fashion designer by profession. He completed his fashion designing course from NeIFT, Guwahati in 2010. He has worked in numerous exclusive shows in Nagaland and was adjudged the best designer during the ‘Mega Model Angels Hunt 2011’ held at Dimapur, Nagaland. You can catch up with him on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/sekuzo.sovenyi
Sekuzo, thanks for your time. We have seen some of your designs and they are really great. Elegantly designed and they are neatly done, chic, and trendy. Where do you get your design inspiration?
Thanks! Well, If I see something colourful that makes me happy, I am automatically inspired. I really can’t name where I get inspiration from. Ideas just pop up and I start working with them. I combine elements, create characters and see how everything goes on their own. Daydreaming, photographs, interactions with other people or the places I go, or an image will just pop into my head. It’s pretty much random, but I’m an idea sorta person.
When did “Sekuzo Designs” come into being? How did it all start?
It was created on 27th June, 2012, it’s been 3 months now. Not owning a boutique at moment, I thought it was a good idea for me to showcase my designs through social networking site like facebook. Thanks to facebook 🙂
How is the fashion scene in NE? What do you see about the fashion trend in the region in the coming years?
I feel it’s really growing. We are fast catching up with the rest of the world. Since we the North Easterners are blessed with rich cultures and traditions, I wish to see more of traditions making a statement in the fashion industry.
Supposing, you were given a chance to dress up one famous personality from the NE for a very special occasion, which personality would you choose and why? And what would you design for him/her?
Well, it has to be our very own Chekrovolü Swüro, the archer who represented India in the 2012 Olympics. Because, I think she is the perfect example and someone we can all look up to as to how she worked hard to stand where she is today. Being from the same tribe, I’d definitely design her our very own Chakhesang traditional attire with a modern touch 😉
If not fashion what would Sekuzo Sovenyi be and why?
Perhaps a Photographer. I love to capture the moments to cherish by 🙂
If someone wishes to buy any of your clothing or want to have custom made outfits designed by you, how do they go about with it?
For now, people can contact me through my Facebook page – www.facebook.com/
What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?
Believe in yourself. Be positive as a good design cannot emerge from a negative mind.
People usually think about fashion as all about the glamour and the glitter but in reality, it’s not just as easy as the way people think it to be. What are the challenges that you face as a designer and especially as a designer from NE?
Yes! The fashion industry is so often portrayed as glamorous and luxurious, but it’s a tremendous amount of work. One should know how to accept criticism and failures. The most important thing is to believe in oneself.
What was your first reaction when your maiden work paid off?
Wow!!! I can finally go shopping…lol
What are your plans for the future?
I’m just starting out. All thanks to North east Institute of Fashion Technology (NeIFT), the base and the foundation of everything that I am now. I still have a long way to go. I want to have my own boutique, label, etc but I want to take it slow. I may go for further studies the coming year.
@Connect is where we connect with talents from the North East states. @Connect will feature amazing folks who are inspiring in a lot many ways. If you would like to be featured on @Connect, please email our editors at editor [at] reviewne [dot] com
