Mary Kom, born Mangte Chungneijang Merykom, is a boxer and mother of two from Churchandpur, Manipur. Mary Kom, also known as the Magnificent Mary, is perhaps the finest, and most successful woman boxer in India. Hailing from a remote village in a remote town from a remote part of India, she has been bringing laurels from the boxing community all over the world and has been proving critics wrong time and again with her amazing boxing feats since the year 2000.
Mary Kom is the ‘only boxer in world to have won a medal in each one of the six World Championships.’ She is a recipient of the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri Award, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, and a special award from AIBA. Mary Kom’s next big dream is to win a Gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
